How was your holiday?

February 20, 2007

The first question of the day was:
How was your holiday?

A usual answer to this question would be:
It was good/great/terrible/wonderful/tiring.

A follow-up question for this might be:
What did you do?

It seems like money is always an important topic with this class. Some useful sentences related to the holiday and money came up in class today.

examples:

Did you get a lot of money?
How much (money) did you get?
I (only) got ____ won.

I gave a lot of money.
I had to give a lot of money.

I feel like traffic is also usually an important topic around this time of year. Some sentences about this year’s traffic are:

Traffic was very light this year/this Lunar New Year.
Driving was easy this year/Lunar New Year.
There was much traffic this year/Lunar New Year.

I was able to tell my on my favorite jokes in class today. One student got a haircut on the holiday weekend. So, I asked her if she got a haircut. Remember:  Did you get a haircut? is a usual sentence. Did you cut your hair? means using scissors and cutting your hair by yourself.

So,  if someone asks:
                                   Did you get a haircut?

(the joke answer is) No, I got them all cut.

I am worried that the Internet has become very cold suddenly. Sorry.

The final thing that we talked about today was the difference between fun, funny, interesting, and exciting.
It seems to me that students often use these four words interchangeably. In English, the meanings are quite different. So, if you are thinking in Korean and want to say 재미있는…..try to remember the differences between these words.

Other important words/phrases that came up today were:

honest

take care of
look after

baby-sit

polite

PS-Good job today…. I will see you tomorrow. I am waiting for the explanation about adrenalin and for Kate’s question part II.
